UK Student Visa Applications Fall 16% in 2026 & ILR 5-Year Rule Update - What You Must Know Today

UK Student Visa Applications Fall 16% in 2026 & ILR 5-Year Rule Update - What You Must Know Today

Today, on 30th September 2026, the UK Home Office has released two major updates that everyone planning to move to the UK must know. First, UK student visa applications have fallen by 16% in the last year. Second, the rumour of ILR after 10 years is still NOT law. The 5-year rule still applies.

1. UK Student Visa Applications Fell by 16% - Official Data

According to Home Office data released on 12 September 2026, the UK received only 360,700 applications from main student applicants between September 2025 and August 2026. This is a 16% drop compared to last year.

Dependent applications fell even more - by 22%, down to only 17,000.

Why are applications falling?

- New rule: Dependents are now only allowed for PhD and Research Masters, not for taught Masters.

- Higher financial requirement: You now need to show £1,483 per month for London and £1,136 for outside London.

- Tighter credibility interviews and more refusals.

- Fear of the new "Earned Settlement" 10-year rule.

But this is actually GOOD NEWS for genuine students. Less competition means higher visa success rate if your documents are perfect. UK universities are now giving more scholarships to fill seats.

2. ILR After 5 Years or 10 Years? The Truth as of 30 September 2026

If you have seen headlines saying "UK ILR now requires 10 years", relax. This is still a PROPOSAL, not a law.

Here is the official status as of today:

- The current in-force rule is still 5 years for ILR on Skilled Worker visa.

- The proposal to make it 10 years (called "Earned Settlement") was under consultation which closed on 12 February 2026. The government is still reviewing them.

- One confirmed change: From 26 March 2027, you will need a higher English level (B2) for ILR.

- So if you are in the UK and your 5 years completes in early 2027, you are still eligible under the old 5-year rule. The fee is £3,226.

3. New Protection for Skilled Workers from 3rd September 2026

From 3 September 2026, the UK has given protection to victims of modern slavery on Skilled Worker visas. Now, if a care worker is officially recognized as a victim of exploitation, they can leave their abusive sponsor and work for another employer without losing their immigration status.

4. What is HC 584? New Rules from 8 October 2026

The Home Office published Statement of Changes HC 584 on 3 September 2026. Most changes take effect from 8 October 2026. No new salary threshold increase for Skilled Worker this time.

Final Verdict: Is the UK Still Worth It on 30 Sept 2026?

Yes, but only if you are strategic. For Students: Apply now, you will get better scholarship chances. For Workers: The 5-year ILR is still alive, don't delay.
